A green pin means a peg of the right colour in the right place. An orange pin means the right colour in the wrong place. Nothing says which peg earned which pin — working that out is the game.

The machine hides a line of coloured pegs. You guess. It answers with pins — a green pin for a peg of the right colour in the right place, an orange pin for the right colour somewhere else in the code. Which pin belongs to which peg, it will not say. That part is yours.

A run, not a puzzle
Crack the code and the next one is a rung harder. Fail to crack one and the run is over, and how far you got is your score. Not how well you did on one puzzle — how far you got before one beat you.
Four pegs, then eight
The code grows from four pegs to eight and the palette from six colours to eight, two or three rungs at a time. That is 360 possible codes on the first rung and 16,777,216 on the last.
Two hints per code
Reveal gives away one peg and locks it. Deduce fills a line with a code that fits every answer so far — not the secret, just one of the codes still standing, so it can still be wrong. Each hint halves what the code pays.
Watch the field narrow
Turn on the count and the board shows how many codes still fit every answer you have been given. Watching 1,296 fall to 4 over five lines is the whole game in one number.

No catches
Three codes free
The first three codes cost nothing — enough to crack one, climb a rung and see the whole game working. One purchase opens the rest of the ladder, on iPhone, iPad and Mac together. That is the only thing for sale: no consumable hints, and no paid second chances, because a run that can be bought back is not worth ranking.
